Michelle Williams is joining Matthew McConaughey for the Weinstein Company mining drama Gold. Williams will play McConaughey’s wife and will also be joining cast member Edgar Ramirez. The film, which is based on the true events of the 1993 mining scandal of the reported discovery of gold in Indonesia, but isn’t the actual story of the scandal itself.

Williams is a fantastic actress, so let’s hope that she’s not just relegated to the role of supporting wife, like so many actresses are.

Stephen Gaghan (Syriana) is set to direct with a script by Patrick Massett and John Zinman (both writers of Friday Night Lights and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider). Filming will begin in June. [Variety]
