The 2016 Oscars: Leonardo DiCaprio Finally Wins Best Actor; “Mad Max” Wins Six Awards

The 88th annual Academy Awards have already garnered a lot of attention, with the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag on Twitter coming back in full force. It’s kind of ironic that Chris Rock hosted this year and there was a lot of pressure for him to do well. And he did, for the most part. His monologue had a lot of great aspects to it. If he wanted to make people laugh and feel a bit uncomfortable for a quick second, then he most certainly pulled that off. He gave out his own fake award too: Best Black Friend goes to Wanda Sykes, who Rock claims has been the best friend for 17 years.

Overall, the night was average, with the ceremony going over its three hour mark by an extra half an hour. “Mad Max: Fury Road” won six technical awards, Brie Larson took home the statue for best actress for “Room,” Leonardo DiCaprio, after years of being nominated, finally took home the award for best actor for his performance in “The Revenant,” and the fantastic “Spotlight” went home with best picture.

You can read the entire list of winners below, in bold. And also check out the highlights from the ceremony, which included Lady Gaga’s performance of “‘Til it Happens to You,” which brought the audience to tears.

  • Chris Rock’s monologue.
  • The skits that placed black actors in place of their white counterparts in film such as “The Danish Girl,” where Tracy Morgan is eating a Danish and declaring that “these Danishes are good, girl!”
  • The “Inside Out” filmmakers made one of the best speeches of the night about how lucky they are because they get to “make stuff.”
  • Chris Rock sold girl scout cookies to a room full of rich people. Morgan Freeman grabbing for one at the end was equal parts hilarious and strange.
  • The director also made a great speech about how her film, “A Girl in the River,” had the ability to change the laws in Pakistan about honor killing. Wow!
  • C3PO, BB8, and R2D2 came onstage and Jacob Tremblay’s reaction was adorable.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio won best actor and got a standing ovation and didn’t disappoint with his speech either.
  • Kevin Hart laughing at his being the butt of a lot of Chris Rock’s jokes.
  • Most awkward moment: Stacy Dash appearing onstage and wishing everyone a Happy Black History Month. Um… yeah, that happened.
