There has been so much controversy surrounding “Nina” that it has overshadowed the film itself. But now the first trailer is here and the film, about legendary singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone, is still struggling with controversy, to the point where even Nina Simone’s estate responded pretty viciously to one of Zoe Saldana’s tweets earlier this week.

It isn’t Zoe Saldana’s fault for the film. She was cast and she wasn’t going to turn down the opportunity, but it’s understandable that many are upset over her casting. And while I won’t judge the film until having seen it, Liz Garbus’ documentary, “What Happened, Miss Simone?” is a strong film about Nina Simone that everyone should see until “Nina” hits theaters on April 22.

You can watch the first trailer for “Nina” below. Directed and written by Cynthia Mort, the film also stars David Oyelowo and Mike Epps.
